Status update on Tomb Raider 7
|
Though today's Eidos Interactive conference call focused on the acquisition of IO Interactive, CEO Mike McGarvey also briefly touched on the future of the Tomb Raider series. In development at San Jose-based studio Crystal Dynamics (the makers of Soul Reaver), the next Tomb Raider is apparently making progress, although we won't be seeing that progress until later on.
"We saw a new version of Tomb Raider for the first time last week at our development meeting and we were extremely impressed with the progress that's been made so far," said McGarvey. "We're still doing a lot of market research, in terms of direction of the content and the character, but the fundamental technology is already complete and the character is up and running in the environment with new moves and new control systems. So we're extremely encouraged to see that progress. We're not in a position right now to articulate the creative direction of the franchise. It's still a little early. But we're certainly very excited about what we've seen so far."
On a related note, sources within Crystal Dynamics have reacted somewhat quizzically to reports that Deus Ex creator Warren Spector is contributing to the design of the next Tomb Raider. Regardless of exactly who is working on the game, however, we look forward to more news as it takes shape.
